ANSE À BERTRAND EXCAVATION

Saint-Pierre et Miquelon: A historic cod fishing hub

Excavations at Anse à Bertrand aim to better understand Saint-Pierre et Miquelon’s role within the region’s historic salt-cod fishery, as well as its place within the trade networks in operation throughout the French Atlantic World between the 17th to 19th centuries. Anse à Bertrand is located on the southeastern edge of the Saint-Pierre harbour.

To date three field seasons (2017, 2018 and 2019) lead the team to uncover three distinct archaeological contexts at the site: one associated with its 17th-18th century occupations, one with its 19th century occupations, and one with its 20th century occupations. Together, these contexts represent over 300 years of more or less continual seasonal use, beginning around 1670 and carrying on until the site’s abandonment in the late 1970’s.
